The MZO Group has incorporated a new product into the construction of new homes and multi family buildings. We like the Lifespan product because it is real wood and looks good for historic and new applications. Why imitate wood when you can use the real deal that has just been treated to withstand the elements better.
A quote below from the manufacturer:

LIFESPAN trim boards, fascia, siding & exterior mouldings are 100% real wood and FSC certified. The EPA approved organic preservative protects against rot, termites, fungi, water & corrosion to fasteners. LIFESPAN is durable, non-corrosive, easy to work with & carries a limited lifetime warranty.

Check out the website to read up on the Carbon based chemicals that are used to preserve the wood that also reduce the corrosion of metals. Back in the day many specifications called for stainless steel fasterners at pressure treated locations but that is not the case with Lifespan. As well as being FSC certified the lumber used in sawmills is dried in Fletcher's kilns, powered by geothermal energy rather than the traditional natural gas burning kilns. Geothermal energy is a clean, renewable resource that does not consume any fuel or produce significant emissions.

We like the direction of this product because it responds to enviromental concerns as well as looking very good on our projects. When I first started in this business everyone was using vinyl siding. It was low maintainance and low cost but lacked the architectural details. Many architectural elements were covered up and even the window casing went away to be replaced with a j channel. I can not tell you how many times we have taken off the vinyl siding only to reveal beautiful details like wood paneling around a bay window or wood crown moulding at an eave with wood dentil trim. It is time to build like we did before. Let's build with care and with quailty materials that will stand the test of time without comprising architectural details. This is the core of sustainable design.

Location, location, lifestyle

Somerville, Mass., is the next town over from Cambridge (home to Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and is being redeveloped in a similar fashion. “It’s a microcosm of young, up-and-coming professionals — people who can’t be or don’t want to be in Boston, but want to live in an urban area that has a lot of different characteristics to it,” says Charles Aggouras of GFC Development, Weston, Mass.

One of GFC’s newest projects, Endicott Green, occupies an infill site in a neighborhood of existing three-story buildings. Architect Jim Zegowitz of the MZO Group, Stoneham, Mass., says the project is a modern interpretation of surrounding buildings. Zegowitz designed three stacked flats, ranging from 1,300 to 1,700 square feet, and incorporated a roof deck that residents could share. Located on a bus line, Endicott Green is also within walking distance of restaurants and other amenities.

“Most of our work is traditional New England style, so when the developer said he wanted something a little bit more modern and contemporary, that was music to my ears,” Zegowitz says. The building materials are as contemporary as the architecture: corrugated steel siding, composite panels, and glass-and-steel balcony railings. Energy-efficient appliances and systems were used throughout. “It’s the first LEED-certified residential project in Somerville,” Aggouras says.

Commanding an average price in the high $500,000s, Endicott Green sold out quickly last winter “when the market was worse than it is now,” says Zegowitz. The buyers are in their early 30s and have jobs in the biomedical and technology sectors.
